This book may be the most unusual business management book ever written. Like most books on the topic of managing principles, there is serious “how to do it better” content. The Art of Making Things is a radical take on management styles in American manufacturing, warehousing and transportation companies. That said, when was the last time you read a serious business subject and laughed? What management book describes plumbers butt and whaletails to make a point? Who has written a business management book after spending 20 years working in many small companies as a general laborer?
That is the career path of Al P. Mason. However, he didn’t start out as a laborer. Al graduated from college in 1972 with a BA Degree in Business Administration and Economics. Soon, he was an owner of a retail furniture store. In the middle 1980s, Al became educated in manufacturing and quality management principles and methods. He created Process Improvement, a consulting and training company dedicated to improving process efficiency. The following decade, he consulted over 200 companies, personally trained over 15000 employees and wrote manuals educating over 100000 employees. He was a leader in American Society for Quality Control and the American Management Association. As part of his company goals, he had a mission to write a management book using efficiency methods to resolve issues that reduce productivity. However, there was no time in the busy schedule. Then his career path took an unexpected turn.
Al describes in the book, “The time between my consulting career and working as a manufacturing laborer…was a period when I fine-tuned my already tainted opinion of Human Resource personnel. Who are these weird people? Who brainwashed them? They never gave me a straight forward question and I never gave them a correct answer. Well, the answer was correct, just not the one they wanted to hear. I was asked to describe as many uses as possible for a paper clip. Without hesitation I declared, there are two uses, 1) to hold pieces of paper together. And 2) break in half, slide over a stretched out rubber band and shoot you in the ass for asking such a stupid question. It was a short interview. I may have learned something.”
He couldn’t find the job he was seeking. With money running short, he went to work for a small packaging/warehousing company. The next 20 years were filled with similar jobs at many different organizations. He worked for, packaging, warehousing, transportation, distribution and several manufacturing companies. Al viewed these low paying jobs as an opportunity to apply his knowledge and experiences to processes. More than all the years of owning and managing successful businesses, these labor intensive jobs shaped his character and led him through real production issues.
He took notes and observed management, employees, suppliers and customers cripple productivity. Like a stone hitting a quiet pool, he saw issues cause a ripple effect of additional activities spread throughout the organizations. The managers, departments and workers made decisions causing production restricting issues on a regular basis. So routine were the actions, the boss thought the decisions to disrupt production were a normal part of doing business. Equipped with an educated eye, coupled with a view from the shop floor, he could see what others could not.
Al finally retired. Using his 20 years of notes and after 3 years of writing, his book is completed. The Art of Making Things or Managing a Small, Labor-Intensive, Manufacturing Company helps managers in thousands of small manufacturers, warehousing and transportation companies recognize ignored issues and restore productivity. His writing style is full of controversy, humor and sarcasm combined with a worker’s perspective and language makes it the most unusual management book ever written.
